Eddie Howe has challenged his Newcastle United side to attack the task head-on as they prepare for the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final against Manchester City on Tuesday night, Softfootball reports.

The Magpies face a daunting assignment at the Etihad Stadium after suffering a 2-0 defeat in the first leg at St James’ Park, leaving them needing a big performance to keep their Carabao Cup hopes alive.

Speaking to the club media via Newcastle’s official X handle, Howe insisted belief and bravery will be key if his side are to turn the tie around.

Part of the Liverpool performance, for the first 30/35 minutes was very strong. Against Paris we had a strong performance all the way through, barring the first 20 minutes. Put those two together and we’ve got an outstanding chance.

Firstly we have to try and win the game. If we have that mentality that we’re going to try and get all the disciplines of our game in a good place and attack the game, let’s see what we can do.

Newcastle will also be eager to respond after a difficult weekend, having been beaten 4-1 away at Liverpool in the Premier League. That result has only added to the motivation within the squad as they look to put things right on a big European stage.

As defending EFL Cup champions, Howe’s side will be hoping to summon another memorable night and reach a second consecutive League Cup final, knowing it will take resilience, intensity and belief to overturn City’s advantage and keep their trophy defence alive.
