Sunderland’s head coach was full of quiet satisfaction after seeing his side edge past Newcastle United with a 1-0 victory in Sunday’s fiercely contested Tyne–Wear derby. Speaking to club TV in a post-match interview shared via the club’s official X handle, the manager reflected on a performance built on control, patience and decisive moments, Softfootball reports.
The Black Cats controlled large spells of the contest, particularly in the first half, before forcing the breakthrough early in the second period. Although the decisive goal came via a Newcastle own goal by Nick Woltemade, Sunderland’s pressure and delivery ultimately told against their rivals, who responded by pushing forward in search of an equaliser.

The win also marks a strong response from Sunderland following last week’s heavy 3-0 defeat to Manchester City. The three points lift them to seventh in the table on 26 points, underlining their resilience and continued push for a strong league finish.
Speaking after the final whistle via the team official X handle, the Sunderland boss said:
Yeah diffrent parts in this game, I think we dominated the ball in the first half even more than we expected, we were patient, maybe a bit too much in the final third, because it was important to deliver and we did it well at the beginning of the second half, even if it was own goal I think the delivery was perfect and we had bodies in the box after that they pushed which is just normal for a team that plays in the champion leagues.
