Ruud van Nistelrooy has emerged as the leading candidate for the vacant Leicester City managerial post, following the club’s decision to part ways with Steve Cooper on Sunday.
Softfootball understands that Cooper leaves the King Power Stadium having won just two of his 12 games in charge, with the club opting to make a change after Saturday’s defeat to Chelsea left them 16th in the table and winless in four matches.
Van Nistelrooy’s case is bolstered by his recent record against Leicester during his interim spell at Manchester United, where he oversaw a 5-2 EFL Cup win and a 3-0 Premier League victory over the Foxes, both at Old Trafford, after taking over from Erik ten Hag.
The Dutchman, who previously managed PSV Eindhoven and won the domestic cup there in 2023, has made no secret of his long-term ambition to manage United permanently.
In the meantime, reports suggest he’s actively exploring other opportunities, with Leicester now the most concrete link.
