United in talks for Patrick Dorgu Amid transfer standoff

Lecce president Saverio Sticchi has confirmed that Manchester United have initiated discussions to sign highly-rated defender Patrick Dorgu.

Despite the Premier League club’s interest, Lecce’s primary focus is retaining the 20-year-old talent.

Dorgu has been listed among Manchester United’s top three left-back targets, alongside Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez, 21, and PSG’s Nuno Mendes, 22. With Luke Shaw sidelined due to injuries, United are eager to strengthen their defensive options before the January transfer window closes.

The Danish wing-back, who joined Lecce from Nordsjaelland in 2022, has quickly earned a reputation as one of Serie A’s most promising young players.

His stellar performances have also attracted interest from Napoli, underlining his growing value in the transfer market.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that United recently sent a delegation to Italy, proposing a £23 million (€27 million) offer with additional add-ons for Dorgu. However, Lecce swiftly rejected the bid, holding out for a valuation closer to £34 million (€40 million).

Speaking to Sky Sport Italia, Sticchi reflected on the negotiations, saying, “It’s satisfying to have a club like Manchester United interested in one of our players.

It shows we’re on the right track. However, we made it clear that our priority is to maintain the squad and secure our position in Serie A.”

Lecce sporting director Pantaleo Corvino echoed this sentiment last month, emphasizing Dorgu’s potential. “He’s not just a potential champion; he already is one.

Whether on the left or right, his energy and goal-scoring ability make him stand out. While interest in him is inevitable, Dorgu will remain with us for now. We’ll revisit his future in the summer,” Corvino told Gazzetta dello Sport.

For now, Lecce appears resolute in keeping their rising star, despite Manchester United’s efforts to bring him to Old Trafford.
