Premier League legend Alan Shearer has applauded Calvin Bassey for his well-taken goal in Fulham’s FA Cup victory over Manchester United, describing the Nigerian’s movement as outstanding.
Bassey gave Fulham the lead with a powerful header before Bruno Fernandes equalised for the hosts, with the Cottagers eventually progressing on penalties. Softfootball understands Shearer believes the defender’s anticipation made the difference during the set-piece.
The former Newcastle United striker also criticized Manchester United’s defending, insisting the Red Devils failed to deal with a routine delivery into the penalty area. Shearer said:
Manchester United lost two headers from what should have been a simple ball to defend.
He, however, reserved special praise for Fulham’s attacking movement, highlighting Bassey’s sharp reactions inside the box.
The movement of the Fulham players was excellent. Bassey, in particular, reacted quicker than everyone else and guided the ball into the corner,
he added.
Shearer concluded that the goal exposed Manchester United’s recurring problems when defending set-pieces, while Bassey’s intelligent positioning and composure under pressure deserved full credit.
The Super Eagles defender’s goal proved to be one of the key moments in Fulham’s memorable victory at Old Trafford.
