West Bromwich Albion defender Semi Ajayi is set to play 45 minutes in a friendly against Newcastle United’s U-21 side as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury.
The Nigerian international has been sidelined since October but is now nearing a return to full fitness. Softfootball reports that manager Tony Mowbray will attend the match to assess his progress.
Mowbray emphasized that this opportunity allows Ajayi to demonstrate his readiness and commitment to earning a place back in the first team. He noted that playing for the youth squad is a standard procedure for players returning from long-term injuries who need match sharpness before competing in the Championship.

He explained the plan by stating:
I’ve had the conversation with Semi. ‘What about 45 minutes?’ I’m coming to watch. Him having to react and deal with things. If they are not getting games, then they play. They are here to play. So they need to want to play, show me, it’s an opportunity to show me why you should be in our team.
Ajayi made twelve league appearances for West Brom this season before his injury setback. His successful return would provide a significant boost to the Baggies’ defensive options as they look to strengthen their squad for the remainder of the campaign.
