Schmeichel Urges Eriksen to Leave United for Ajax Return

Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen is facing an uncertain future at Old Trafford, with club legend Peter Schmeichel advising him to consider a return to Ajax. Eriksen, now 32, has struggled for game time this season, making just seven Premier League starts under new boss Ruben Amorim.

Despite nearing 100 appearances for United since his 2022 arrival, Eriksen has been reduced to a bit-part role, as Amorim’s high-energy, high-pressing system does not suit his style of play.

Schmeichel believes Eriksen “no longer has the energy” to thrive in the Premier League and sees a move to Ajax as an ideal solution

Eriksen began his career at Ajax, winning three Eredivisie titles before moving on to Tottenham, Inter Milan, Brentford, and eventually Manchester United. Schmeichel told Voetbal Primeur:

“A return to Ajax would be a great step for him. The Premier League today demands players who can sprint for 90 minutes, and that’s not in Eriksen’s nature anymore. Amorim’s system is built on intense pressing, and that doesn’t suit him. But Eriksen is still an incredibly talented player, technically brilliant, and Ajax would be a fantastic move

United’s struggles under Amorim have been evident. The Red Devils sit 13th in the Premier League, 14 points off the Champions League spots, with a negative goal difference after 24 games. Despite these setbacks, Amorim remains committed to his tactical approach.

Former Denmark international Thomas Gravesen has also cast doubt on Eriksen’s future at the club, going as far as to say his time at United is “100% over.” Speaking to Tipsbladet, Gravesen expressed concern about Eriksen’s career trajectory:

“Where does he go from here? Where can he still earn the kind of salary he gets at United? His development has been downward in recent years, and it’s sad to see such a great player’s career ending this way.”

With doubts surrounding his future in Manchester, Eriksen faces a crucial decision. Will he stay and fight for his place, or could a return to Ajax provide the fresh start he needs?
