Schmeichel defends Hojlund amid Man United striker crisis

Manchester United’s attacking woes deepened after Ruben Amorim benched Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee in the defeat to Crystal Palace.

With Hojlund goalless in 13 matches and Amorim opting for Kobbie Mainoo as a false nine, questions over the striker’s role have intensified.

Despite criticism from former captain Gary Neville, United legend Peter Schmeichel believes Hojlund’s struggles stem from the team’s style of play rather than his ability. He praised the Dane’s determination and insisted he remains central to United’s long-term plans.

Hojlund, a £72 million signing from Atalanta, impressed in his debut season with 16 goals but has found the net just twice in the Premier League this term.

While Schmeichel remains optimistic about his future, Premier League legend Alan Shearer suggested the young striker may be questioning his place at the club after being overlooked in a crucial game.

With United eyeing Sporting’s Viktor Gyokeres for a summer transfer, Hojlund’s future at Old Trafford remains uncertain as the season unfolds.
