Paul Scholes Names Four Players United Must Replace

Paul Scholes has identified four players Ruben Amorim must replace if Manchester United hopes to become a Premier League contender again. The club legend insists United “won’t win the league” with Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro as their defensive duo.

Since Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag in November, United’s struggles have worsened. They currently sit 13th in the Premier League, 14 points away from Champions League qualification, and their latest league match saw them fall to Crystal Palace.

Speaking on The Overlap, Scholes emphasized that Amorim has a massive rebuild ahead. He believes United lack the solid spine that successful teams like Liverpool have and suggests that multiple key positions need upgrades.

“I think a new goalkeeper is needed, possibly two centre-halves, one midfielder, and one forward,” Scholes said. “They need to create a strong spine to build around.”

Scholes is unimpressed with Yoro, pointing out his struggles in recent performances, and isn’t convinced that De Ligt is the answer either.

“Yoro is young, but I haven’t liked what I’ve seen. Did you watch the Southampton game? He’s still developing, but he’s not ready,” he said.

As for De Ligt, Scholes was blunt: “Not really a fan. Where are your ambitions? Are you going to win the Premier League with De Ligt and Yoro as your center-halves? Even when Lisandro Martinez is fit, he’s not good enough to lead United to a title.”

Scholes also questioned De Ligt’s career trajectory: “His age and the number of clubs he’s been at worry me. He seems to have declined with each move. There’s a reason those clubs let him go.”

Despite their struggles, Manchester United had a quiet January transfer window. Their only additions were Danish full-back Patrick Dorgu and teenage defender Ayden Heaven. Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford (Aston Villa) and Antony (Real Betis) were both loaned out.

Following a fortunate FA Cup win against Leicester City, Amorim’s side will now travel to North London for a crucial Premier League clash against Tottenham. Will they show signs of improvement, or will their struggles continue?
