Victor Osimhen has moved level with a Super Eagles legend. His goal in Thursday’s 1-1 draw with Benin Republic brought his international tally to 23, matching Segun Odegbami’s long-standing record and making the pair joint second on Nigeria’s all-time scoring list, behind only one other name in the country’s history.
Softfootball gathered that Odegbami, speaking on Eagle7fm, welcomed the milestone as a sign of the team’s growing attacking depth under Augustine Eguavoen.
Odegbami said:
It’s a good thing that he has equaled my record. This shows we now have players who can deliver the goals for the national team.
Osimhen will have the chance to move clear of Odegbami when Nigeria hosts Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Monday, in what is technically a dead rubber given Nigeria’s early qualification.
The all time record still belongs to Rashidi Yekini, who scored 37 goals in 58 appearances for the Super Eagles between 1984 and 1998.
