Former VfL Bochum manager Peter Neururer has criticized Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso for starting Nathan Tella ahead of Victor Boniface against Bayern Munich.
The German tactician argued that while Tella worked hard, he lacked the clinical finishing required for such a high-stakes Bundesliga clash.
Softfootball reports that Neururer believes the decision hindered Leverkusen’s attacking potency.
Neururer emphasized that players like Boniface and Patrick Schick offer a different threat due to their goal-scoring instincts. He noted that while Tella provided energy and movement, the team missed a reliable finisher to convert the chances created during the match against the league leaders.
He explained his view by stating:
What was Alonso thinking? He had worked outstandingly against the ball at the front, but also missed several great chances. He remains with a meager goal this season. I need people like Boniface, like Schick, who are dangerous in front of goal.
