Vincent Kompany has refused to get involved in discussions surrounding Harry Kane’s potential new contract at Bayern Munich, insisting that his priority is to ensure the England captain remains comfortable and focused on performing at the highest level.
Speaking to Sky Sport, Kompany said he respects the relationship between Kane, his representatives and the club, making it clear that contract negotiations are not his responsibility.
I’m always respectful of the situation between the player, the agent and the club,
Kompany said.
My responsibility in all of this is simply to make sure that Harry feels comfortable here. I am making sure he can perform at the best level.
Kane has continued to be a key figure for Bayern since joining the German giants, with his goalscoring form making him one of the most important players in Kompany’s squad. His future has therefore attracted considerable attention as Bayern look to maintain their status among Europe’s elite.
For Kompany, however, the focus remains firmly on football. The Bayern boss wants Kane to feel settled and continue producing the performances that have made him such a prolific striker.
Meanwhile, Kane has also set his sights on an extraordinary international milestone. The England captain is chasing Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of 146 international goals and believes it is possible for him to challenge the legendary Portuguese forward’s mark.
We will reach 100 first… and then we’ll go from there,
Kane said.
The striker also pointed to the longevity of players who continue performing at the highest level well into their late 30s.
It’s possible, of course. I’ve seen many players in their late 30s still at the highest level,
Kane added.
Kane’s comments underline his ambition to continue playing for England for many years, with the Ronaldo record now firmly in his sights. For Bayern and England, keeping Kane performing at his best remains the immediate priority.
