Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe has been formally cleared of rape allegations following an investigation by the Swedish Prosecution Authority, which concluded there was insufficient evidence to proceed.
The announcement came via a statement from lead investigator Marina Chirakova in the early hours of Thursday, bringing an end to a case that had cast a shadow over the France international since October.
Softfootball understands the investigation was launched after a complaint was filed alleging an incident took place at a Stockholm hotel.
Chirakova confirmed the decision to close the case, stating:
My assessment is that the evidence is not sufficient to proceed and the investigation is therefore closed.
The allegations stemmed from an incident reported to have occurred after Mbappe and his group visited a restaurant and nightclub in the Swedish capital.
Throughout the investigation, Mbappe consistently and firmly denied any wrongdoing, and the case has now been formally closed without charges being brought.
