Former Inter Milan defender Marco Materazzi believes Simone Inzaghi has the qualities to succeed Pep Guardiola at Manchester City should the Spaniard leave the Premier League champions.
Softfootball understands that Materazzi feels Inzaghi’s tactical ability and managerial experience make him an ideal fit for English football, with several top Premier League clubs capable of benefiting from his services.
Speaking on the Italian Football Podcast, the 2006 FIFA World Cup winner suggested that Inzaghi would also be a strong candidate for clubs such as Arsenal and Manchester United.
However, Materazzi admitted he would prefer to see the Inter Milan boss remain at the San Siro, insisting the Italian coach still has unfinished business with the Nerazzurri.
The former defender explained that he has known Inzaghi for many years, dating back to their playing careers, and has immense respect for his work as a coach.
While refusing to speculate on Inzaghi’s future, Materazzi reiterated his hope that the former Lazio manager continues leading Inter.
Despite Inter sitting just one point behind Serie A leaders Napoli, Materazzi pointed to the club’s impressive Champions League campaign as evidence of Inzaghi’s quality. The Nerazzurri have recorded three wins and a draw in their opening four matches while keeping a perfect defensive record without conceding a goal.
