Luis de la Fuente is set to continue as Spain head coach after agreeing a new contract with the Spanish Football Federation, extending his tenure beyond the 2026 World Cup triumph.
The agreement was initially reported as a renewal through July 2030, but the latest announcement from RFEF president Rafael Louzán indicates that the deal will actually keep De la Fuente in charge until 2032.
Softfootball reports that Louzán has strongly backed the coach following Spain’s recent success, highlighting the results achieved during De la Fuente’s time in charge. Spain have won the Nations League, Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup under his leadership, while suffering only two defeats in 41 competitive matches, according to Reuters.
The new agreement ensures De la Fuente will oversee Spain through the 2030 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, and potentially through Euro 2032. The extension also reflects the federation’s desire for continuity after a highly successful period for the national team.
Meanwhile, Marcos Llorente has stepped away from Spain duty following the World Cup triumph. The Atlético Madrid midfielder has informed the federation of his decision not to continue with the national team, meaning he will not be involved in the upcoming Nations League campaign.
Llorente’s decision comes as De la Fuente begins preparing a new chapter with the reigning world champions. His departure creates another selection decision for the coach as Spain look to maintain the squad’s competitive level.
With De la Fuente’s future secured and the national team entering a new cycle, Spain will now focus on defending their status as world champions while building towards the 2030 tournament on home soil.
