Leeds United are making significant progress in their pursuit of Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the new Premier League season.

Softfootball understands that discussions are advancing, with Leeds emerging as the frontrunners for the 23-year-old after Newcastle United opted against pursuing a deal this summer.

Trafford was offered to Newcastle in June, but the Magpies chose to focus on alternative goalkeeping targets, leaving Leeds in a strong position to secure the England international’s signature.

The move comes a year after Manchester City completed Trafford’s return from Burnley, bringing back the highly rated goalkeeper after his impressive spell at Turf Moor. Despite his reputation as one of England’s brightest young goalkeepers, Trafford has found first-team opportunities limited at the Etihad Stadium.

Leeds see Trafford as the ideal replacement following Karl Darlow’s departure and are prepared to make him their first-choice goalkeeper as part of the club’s Premier League rebuild. With Newcastle no longer in the race, Leeds are hopeful of reaching an agreement in the coming days as they continue working to complete one of their biggest signings of the summer transfer window.
