Manchester United have suffered a double injury setback ahead of their UEFA Champions League clash against Atlético Madrid, with Kobbie Mainoo and Luke Shaw both ruled out of the encounter. Manager Michael Carrick confirmed that the pair did not travel to Spain after experiencing physical problems during Saturday’s 1-1 Premier League draw against Tottenham Hotspur.

Meanwhile, Manchester United have completed the signing of 16-year-old winger Isaac Konde from Liverpool. The highly rated academy prospect has agreed to continue his development at Old Trafford after progressing through Liverpool’s youth ranks, with the move representing another investment in United’s future talent.

Mainoo’s absence leaves Carrick with another decision to make in midfield, particularly as United look to improve their performances following a difficult start to the domestic campaign. The young midfielder featured against Tottenham, but his physical issue means he will not be available for the European test.

Shaw’s absence is another concern for United, who have already faced defensive fitness problems. His unavailability could force Carrick to consider alternative options at left-back as his side prepares to face Diego Simeone’s team in Madrid.

The timing of the injuries is far from ideal, with Atlético arriving in strong form after recording four consecutive victories across all competitions. United, meanwhile, have struggled for consistency, collecting just six points from their first six Premier League matches in what has been described as their worst league start since 1986.

Despite their domestic difficulties, United will hope to build on their 4-0 Champions League opening victory over Sabah. However, facing Atlético away from home presents a considerably tougher challenge.

Carrick must now find solutions without two important players as United seek a positive result and a much-needed confidence boost in Europe.
