Softfootball Nigeria can confirm that on deadline day, Nigerian Super Eagles midfielder Kelechi Nwakali has officially signed for Cypriot side PAC Omonia 29, following the mutual termination of his contract with English club Barnsley.
On Friday, 28 August 2026, Nwakali departed English League One side Barnsley with one year left on his deal. Barnsley had long been rumoured to be looking to offload the midfielder, who had barely featured since the 2024/25 season.
The Nigerian midfielder will now compete in the Cyprus First Division, beginning a new chapter in his career. He also joins fellow Super Eagles star Francis Uzoho, who signed for the club last week, increasing the Nigerian presence in the squad ahead of the new season.
Before leaving Barnsley, Nwakali played 26 games in his first season, scoring a fine goal at Exeter. However, he was frozen out under Conor Hourihane after returning late from the summer break, making only four substitute appearances at the end of the campaign. Under new boss Daniel Stendel, he did not make a single appearance, leading to the decision to terminate his contract.
