Just day 1 of the UEFA Champions League, and Juventus and Borussia Dortmund have already played out one of the wildest games of this season’s league phase so far, drawing 4-4 at the Allianz Stadium on Tuesday night. Unlike Juventus’s dramatic 4-3 victory against Inter in the Italian Serie A, all eight goals came in the second half, with Lloyd Kelly grabbing the final equaliser deep into stoppage time.

Softfootball predicted a 2-2 result in the game preview, but the teams dramatically went one further and scored 8 dramatic goals. For a while, it didn’t look like we’d get anything close to that level of chaos. The first half was flat, cautious, almost dull. Juventus threatened early when Khéphren Thuram tried his luck from distance, only for Gregor Kobel to produce a fingertip save. Dortmund saw most of the ball but couldn’t do much with it. Chances did fall for Loïs Openda and Jonathan David, both new Juventus signings, but neither could take them.
Then the floodgates opened. Karim Adeyemi broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute after being played through by Serhou Guirassy. That seemed to spark Juve into life, and Kenan Yıldız quickly replied with a stunning long-range strike.

From there, the match became a basketball game. Felix Nmecha put Dortmund back in front with a powerful effort, only for Dusan Vlahović to level again minutes later. Yan Couto then swept in a third for Dortmund, assisted by Marcel Sabitzer, and it looked like the visitors might finally close it out when Ramy Bensebaini converted from the spot.

But Juventus refused to go away. Vlahović equalised again in stoppage time, turning in Pierre Kalulu’s cross, before turning provider for Kelly, who rose highest to head home in the 96th minute.
The result left everyone in shock, including Dortmund official X Handleler, as there were no right words to describe what was just witnessed.

In the end, neither side lost, though both might feel they should have won. Dortmund stay unbeaten this season under Niko Kovač, but blowing the lead three times will sting. Juventus, meanwhile, showed huge spirit, with Vlahović at the heart of everything two goals, two assists, and plenty of fight.
