Jordan Henderson weighs up Liverpool move after Ajax departure

Softfootball has revealed that Jordan Henderson is exploring offers from both the Premier League and across Europe after officially parting ways with Ajax. The English player is likely to make a return to Anfield, where he enjoyed good fortune, where he won the Champions League and the EPL.

According to The Athletic, the former Liverpool captain, 35, opted not to activate the one-year extension clause in his deal with the Dutch giants, making him a free agent this summer.

Henderson joined Ajax in January 2024 after ending a short-lived stint at Al Ettifaq, where he made just 17 appearances following his £12 million switch from Anfield.

During his 18-month spell in Amsterdam, Henderson featured 57 times but missed out on silverware, as PSV Eindhoven snatched the Eredivisie title late in the season. A managerial shake-up saw Francesco Farioli depart, replaced by John Heitinga, formerly assistant to Liverpool boss Arne Slot.

Despite a solid campaign, Henderson has chosen to seek a new challenge, with sources close to the midfielder confirming that interest has emerged from clubs in England, Spain, and Italy.

He was back at Anfield last week for a condolence visit following the death of Diogo Jota, a former teammate.

His exit comes during a period of mourning following the tragic death of Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, in a car crash last week. Henderson, who laid a personal tribute at Anfield, is yet to publicly comment on his Ajax departure out of respect for the Jota family.

Henderson is expected to make a final decision in the coming days, with regular minutes a key factor. Having returned to the international fold under new England boss Thomas Tuchel, the veteran midfielder is determined to make the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The 84-cap England international last featured in a 3-0 win over Andorra in June and will be looking to build momentum ahead of the new campaign.

On the other hand, Liverpool is yet to ship out-of-favour Darwin Nunez from the club. As earlier reported by Softfootball, Liverpool reportedly rejected a €55m offer from Napoli for striker Darwin Nunez as Antonio Conte looks to reinforce his squad ahead of the new season.

Despite intense speculation connecting the Italian champions with the Uruguayan forward, Liverpool is holding out for a higher fee. The offer, which includes €50m upfront and €5m in add-ons, was reportedly made earlier last week and was quickly rejected by the Reds.
