Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has given back to his local community by launching a temporary pop-up shop in East London, providing free food and Christmas turkeys to families struggling to afford festive meals.
The Fulham star named the initiative “Alexpress” as part of his efforts to support those in need during the holiday season.
Softfootball understands Iwobi said the inspiration behind the project came from the generosity he witnessed growing up, with his parents regularly helping others in their community.
Speaking to BBC Sport Africa, Iwobi said:
In the house I was raised in, my dad naturally just gave back. To people in Nigeria, to his family and even people in the street, he would just buy bottles of water and give them to neighbours.
The Nigeria international revealed that his parents’ selfless acts continue to influence the way he approaches life and giving back.
Seeing how my mum and dad are has inspired me to give to others, whether they are fortunate or less fortunate. With the position I am in, I feel like it’s only right with the influence I have that I give back as well,
he added.
Iwobi’s initiative brought festive relief to several families in East London, reflecting his commitment to making a positive impact away from football.
