Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand believes Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola will be concerned about the arrival of Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford following Sporting Lisbon’s impressive display in the UEFA Champions League.
Softfootball understands that Ferdinand made the observation after Sporting Lisbon came from behind to thrash Manchester City 4-1 on Tuesday night in Amorim’s final home game before taking charge of Manchester United. Viktor Gyokeres starred with a hat-trick as the Portuguese champions produced a dominant second-half performance.
Speaking after the match, Ferdinand said Sporting’s display highlighted the qualities Amorim could bring to Manchester United, particularly the team’s aggression, intensity and resilience after the break.
The former England international believes those are attributes United have been missing in recent seasons and expects the Portuguese tactician to gradually transform the team’s mentality and style of play.
Ferdinand admitted he is excited about the appointment but stressed that supporters must remain patient, insisting that rebuilding Manchester United will take time rather than producing instant success.
He also suggested Guardiola would be keeping a close eye on Amorim’s arrival, believing the City boss understands the impact the 39-year-old could eventually have on United if he is given the time and support to implement his ideas.
Amorim officially takes charge of Manchester United later this month with the club currently sitting 13th in the Premier League after collecting just 13 points from their opening 10 matches. The Red Devils have also endured a disappointing start to their UEFA Europa League campaign, remaining without a win after three group-stage fixtures.
