Recap

Omar Marmoush was the standout performer as Manchester City thrashed Newcastle United 4-0 in the Premier League on Saturday, netting a sensational first-half hat-trick that left the visitors stunned.

With a crucial Champions League clash against Real Madrid on the horizon, City would have been forgiven for having one eye on that match, but they showed remarkable professionalism in a dominant first-half display at the Etihad Stadium. Marmoush’s hat-trick came in a rapid 14-minute spell, starting with a delicate lob over Newcastle’s goalkeeper, Martin Dubravka, following a perfect through ball from Ederson. The Egyptian forward then fired two powerful shots past Dubravka, giving City a commanding 3-0 lead at halftime.

City, who have been prone to late collapses this season, avoided any such issues and even extended their lead late in the match. Substitute James McAtee scored from an Erling Haaland flick-on from a corner to seal the 4-0 win, adding a finishing touch to the dominant performance.

However, it wasn’t all positive for City. Haaland was forced off in the final minutes after tweaking his knee, leaving manager Pep Guardiola anxious ahead of their midweek Champions League clash at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The victory lifted Manchester City above Chelsea into fourth place in the Premier League after Chelsea’s defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion on Friday night.
