Egypt Edge Guinea-Bissau 1–0 to End Qualifying Campaign on a High

3 Min Read

Egypt wrapped up their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign with a narrow 1–0 win over Guinea-Bissau in Cairo in the game’s preview. Softfootball expected the encounter to be an easy one for Egypt, and the game eventually was more of a formality than a fight they’d already booked their ticket to North America long before kickoff, but still, the Pharaohs looked eager to finish strong.

The only goal of the game came early, in the 10th minute, through Mohamed Hamdi. After that, it was mostly about control and patience. Egypt passed the ball around, broke Guinea-Bissau’s press when needed, and managed the tempo without really shifting out of second gear. Guinea-Bissau were organised but couldn’t find a breakthrough of their own.

Before the game Egypt posted a video on their official X account about the need for the team to wrap up the campaign with a victory, and despite resting many starters, they had no problems securing all three points.

A few days earlier, Ethiopia had beaten Guinea-Bissau 2–1 in what was considered a crucial result for the underdogs. That defeat left Guinea-Bissau under pressure heading into Cairo, and despite their effort, they came away empty-handed again. It’s now two consecutive losses for them, leaving them fourth in the group on 10 points after 10 games.

Egypt, meanwhile, had already sealed qualification after a consistent run that included wins over several strong African sides and a 3-nil cruise victory over Djibouti thanks to two Mo Salah goals. This last victory was less about necessity and more about rhythm and squad testing — a good chance for the coach to look at fringe players before next summer’s World Cup.

For Guinea-Bissau, it’s disappointment; for Egypt, it’s quiet confidence. The Pharaohs, Africa’s most decorated side, will now shift focus toward preparing for the 2026 tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The goal this time is clear — make it past the group stage, something they’ve yet to manage in their World Cup history.

Softfootball’s Verdict: Egypt did what they needed — nothing flashy, just efficient. A routine win to close out a solid qualifying campaign.
