Softfootball understands that Fenerbahçe’s reported interest in Darwin Núñez has generated plenty of discussion this week, but contrary to several claims, a move for the Al Hilal striker was never close to being completed.
While initial reports suggested advanced negotiations or a possible loan agreement, sports expert Fabrizio Romano via his official X account, indicate that talks did not progress beyond preliminary stages.
He posted:
Darwin Nunez and Fenerbahçe, deal not happening and never close these days.
Fenerbahçe,who recently completed the signing of kante from Al Ittihad, had explored the possibility of signing Núñez as they look to strengthen their attacking options before the Turkish Super Lig transfer deadline.

A loan structure with a purchase option was mentioned in reports, but there was no formal breakthrough between the two clubs. The gap in valuation and financial terms reportedly remained significant throughout.
reports suggest that Fenerbahçe submitted an offer and discussions were ongoing. However, ongoing discussions does not necessarily mean a deal is close. In this case, conversations appear to have been basic rather than advanced, with no agreement reached on key elements of the transfer.

There was also speculation linking the situation to Youssef En-Nesyri’s recent departure from Fenerbahçe to Al-Ittihad. The exit created a need for reinforcements up front, but Núñez was always viewed as a complicated and expensive option, especially this late in the window.
The finances simply didn’t make much sense, Reports of club president Sadettin Saran holding direct contact with the player highlighted interest, yet personal outreach alone rarely guarantees a transfer.
With the Turkish transfer window closing on February 6, time is running short. At this stage, it is clear the move never came close to completion, despite the noise surrounding it.
