Softfootball understands that Claudio Echeverri is reportedly considering an early departure from Bayer Leverkusen in the upcoming January 2026 transfer window. The 19-year-old Argentine attacking midfielder, on loan from Manchester City, has struggled to find consistent playing time in Germany.
As reported by Fabrizio Romano via his official X account, Girona has already entered formal talks with Manchester City to bring Echeverri on loan for the rest of the season.

He said:
Claudio Echeverri, open to leaving Bayer Leverkusen in January for a new chapter as he’s not playing as planned. After River Plate, also Girona opened talks to try sign Echeverri on loan from Man City
Girona fits perfectly with Manchester City’s long-term development strategy, similar to the path taken by Vitor Reis.
Across all competitions, Echeverri has featured only 11 times, six appearances in the Bundesliga and five in the champions League, starting just three matches and providing a single assist.

With opportunities limited under new manager Kasper Hjulmand, following Erik ten Hag’s short-lived tenure of just four games, the youngster’s development has clearly stalled.
Pep Guardiola, who recently criticized Echeverri’s agent for his slow development, and City’s sporting leadership have repeatedly favoured CFG pathways to ensure young talents get the best European experience.
Echeverri reportedly supports the move to Girona, viewing it as a chance to restart his adaptation to European football in a more favourable environment. However, the deal may hinge on Girona freeing up a non-EU slot, likely involving Jhon Solís or Yáser Asprilla.

Although Echeverri has expressed interest in returning to River Plate, Manchester City, which recently raised concerns about his limited playing time, has ruled out a loan move to Argentina.
The club insists he must remain in Europe to develop tactically and physically ahead of a potential future role at City. Sources say City executives are ready to trigger a recall clause in his Leverkusen loan, given his lack of game time, and immediately arrange a new move where he is guaranteed regular minutes.
Echeverri is still seen as a future attacking talent for Manchester City. The January window could be decisive for him, as uninterrupted playing time will be crucial ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup cycle.
