Chelsea decide against new goalkeeper signing

Chelsea have reportedly decided not to pursue a new goalkeeper to replace Robert Sanchez, despite the Spaniard facing heavy criticism this season.

Sanchez has been under scrutiny from football pundits, with some labeling him a weak link in the team.

A viral video highlighting his errors has only intensified calls for a change, with head coach Enzo Maresca even considering dropping him as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Earlier reports linked Chelsea to a potential move for Japan international Zion Suzuki from Parma. However, according to The Athletic, the club has opted against signing a new goalkeeper, believing they already possess sufficient talent to challenge Sanchez in the long term.

Chelsea’s confidence lies in two young prospects: Filip Jorgensen, who joined from Villarreal last summer for €24.5m, and Mike Penders, set to arrive from Genk in July. Both are viewed as viable competition for the No. 1 jersey.

Jorgensen, who has made 13 appearances this season—mostly in the Conference League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup—has struggled to break into the Premier League starting lineup due to Sanchez’s dominance.

However, Sanchez’s position could soon be under threat, particularly after recent errors, including a high-profile mistake in Chelsea’s 3-1 victory over Wolves.

Football pundit Jamie Carragher criticized Sanchez on Sky Sports, stating, “We keep seeing signs that Sanchez is a Premier League goalkeeper, but maybe for a team in the bottom half of the table—not for a top team.”

With Mike Penders joining the squad in the summer and Jorgensen already in the mix, Chelsea appear to be banking on their young goalkeepers to push Sanchez and secure the long-term future of the position.
