Arsenal have reportedly suffered an early setback in their search for a new striker after Botafogo rejected their opening bid for Brazilian forward Igor Jesus, Softfootball reports.
Manager Mikel Arteta is keen to strengthen his attacking options during the January transfer window as the Gunners continue their push for silverware this season.
While Arsenal continue to monitor high-profile targets such as Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak and RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, both players are expected to be difficult to sign before the summer. As a result, the North London club have turned their attention to more affordable alternatives.
Igor Jesus has emerged as one of those options following an impressive spell with Botafogo since joining from UAE side Shabab Al-Ahli. The 23-year-old has contributed eight goals and five assists in 31 appearances, attracting interest from several European clubs.
Reports suggest Arsenal’s initial proposal was rejected, with Botafogo unwilling to sanction a loan move. However, the Brazilian club could consider a permanent transfer if their valuation is met.
Although Jesus has a reported €100 million release clause, sources claim a fee in the region of €20 million could be enough to secure his signature this month.
