Arsenal’s pursuit of Valencia centre-back Cristhian Mosquera has taken a step forward, even after their opening bid was reportedly rejected. The Gunners initiated talks earlier this week and are said to be accelerating efforts to finalize a deal soon, hoping to capitalize on the 20-year-old’s contract situation at Mestalla.
Mosquera emerged as a breakout star in La Liga last season, featuring in 37 of Valencia’s 38 league matches. His absence in their 7-1 defeat to Barcelona only emphasized his growing influence. The Spain Under-21 international also represented his country at the Under-21 Euros and was part of their Olympic-winning squad.

Arsenal view the young defender as a long-term solution and valuable depth for William Saliba, who was overused last season due to limited cover. Mosquera’s ability to play at both centre-back and right-back makes him a strategic fit in Mikel Arteta’s rotation plans.
Valencia turned down Arsenal’s first bid, though the fee remains undisclosed. With Mosquera’s contract expiring in 2026 and the player reportedly prioritizing a move to the Emirates, Arsenal are optimistic about completing a deal under £17 million. Personal terms are expected to be straightforward.
Interest from clubs like Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, Aston Villa, Bournemouth, and previously Chelsea shows Mosquera’s rising stock, but Arsenal are currently leading the race. Leipzig, once keen, have reportedly withdrawn over financial concerns.
While some fans might question another defensive signing—especially with deals for Christian Norgaard, Kepa Arrizabalaga, and Martin Zubimendi nearly finalized—Arsenal’s recent injury woes justify the addition. With Ben White and Jurrien Timber primarily used at full-back and Takehiro Tomiyasu recovering from injury and nearing contract expiry, depth at the back is a growing concern.
Despite limited chances to start regularly ahead of Gabriel and Saliba, Mosquera’s arrival would bolster Arsenal’s backline in a demanding season across multiple competitions.
