Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has brushed aside Victor Boniface’s frustrated reaction after the Nigerian striker was substituted during Saturday’s 2-2 Bundesliga draw away to Werder Bremen.

Boniface continued his impressive form by scoring Leverkusen’s opening goal before making way for Patrick Schick in the 70th minute. The Super Eagles forward was visibly disappointed with the decision and showed his frustration as he left the pitch.

However, Softfootball understands that Alonso has no concerns over the striker’s reaction, insisting it is a normal response from a player eager to help his team.

Yes, but that’s normal. All players want to keep going. He did well, scored a goal, but we needed a bit more energy,

Alonso told Kicker.

The Spanish tactician also provided an update on Boniface’s fitness following the recent car accident that briefly disrupted his preparations.

“Boni trained well on Friday, so we decided that he would start,” Alonso explained.

The Leverkusen boss expressed his delight at seeing the Nigerian return to scoring form and hopes the focus will now remain on his performances on the pitch rather than the unfortunate incident.

“He scored a goal. Hopefully, the car accident is no longer an issue, and we can talk about football,”

he added.

Boniface has enjoyed another productive campaign for the Bundesliga champions, contributing eight goals and one assist in 11 appearances across all competitions. His return to full fitness is expected to be a major boost as Leverkusen continue their domestic and European ambitions this season.
