Bergkamp Picks Sol Campbell as His Ultimate Defensive Nightmare

3 Min Read

Dennis Bergkamp has named Sol Campbell as the toughest defender he ever faced, revealing that the former Arsenal centre-back had the complete package to shut down elite attackers.

In a video shared by The Overlap via their x handle, the Dutch legend explained that Campbell “had everything” strength, pace, and intelligence making him incredibly difficult to play against.

Speaking further on the Stick to Football podcast, Bergkamp expanded on the type of defenders he struggled with the most.

According to him, the worst opponents weren’t just physically strong or fast, but those who could also read the game well. Defenders who understood his movement, anticipated his touches, and positioned themselves early made life extremely uncomfortable for him.

While Sol Campbell stood out as his toughest matchup, Bergkamp also gave credit to Fabio Cannavaro, Rio Ferdinand, and Jaap Stam as defenders who combined physical power with elite football intelligence.

The discussion on elite standards continued with Roy Keane and Rio Ferdinand reflecting on leadership and mentality at the top level. Keane reiterated his long-standing belief that players at big clubs must “be the standard,” not simply compete.

Softfootball highlighted that Ferdinand recalled a moment from his early days at Manchester United when Keane angrily confronted him for playing a safe sideways pass, reminding him that expectations at Old Trafford were far higher than at his previous clubs.

The debate later shifted to Manchester United’s managerial future. Rio Ferdinand publicly backed Michael Carrick for the permanent role after his impressive interim spell, which included big wins over Manchester City and Arsenal.

Ferdinand described the criticism aimed at Carrick as “unbelievable” and questioned why he wasn’t being taken seriously. Keane, however, remained unconvinced, insisting that while Carrick is doing well, United should aim for a manager with a long-term, proven record of leading title challenges.

Altogether, the conversations highlighted what true elite standards look like on the pitch, in the dressing room, and in the dugout.
