Napoli battled to a narrow victory 3-2 over Pisa in the Serie A match-day 4 on a day Scott McTominay finished 18th in the 2025 Ballon d’Or, Softfootball reports.
The Scotland international could not attend the ceremony as he was fully involved in the match inside the Diego Maradona stadium as they maintained their position on top of the table. It was an important game to help the team’s confidence after losing in midweek against Manchester City at the Etihad.

Napoli shared a post on their official X handle celebrating the win.

Former Brighton midfielder, Billy Gilmour gave Napoli a first half lead with a lovely finish. But the away side stubbornly fought their way back into the game when M’Bala Nzola scored from the penalty.
However, Leonardo Spinazzola restored Napoli’s lead in the second half before Lorenzo Lucca wrapped it up with a smart finish late in the game to secure the win for the defending champions. But the win witnessed a late scare as Lorran de Sousa scored to make it 3-2 but Napoli held on for the win.
Already, this season, McTominay scored in Napoli’s 2-0 win against Sassuolo in the opening game of the season. Today, he has helped Napoli extend their unbeaten record in the Serie A.
McTominay was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the Serie A last season following an outstanding debut season. But his 18th place finish in the Ballon D’Or makes him the highest-ranking Serie A player, as Inter’s duo Lautaro Martinez and Denzel Dumfries finished 20th and 25th respectively.
McTominay joined Napoli last summer for a reported fee of around €30 million and played 36 times in all competitions for the club, scoring 13 goals with six assists.
