Ilkay Gundogan looks set for a shock move to Turkey, with Manchester City giving him the all-clear to join Galatasaray.

The midfielder, who has barely kicked a ball this season, is weighing up a two-year deal worth around €5m per season. Galatasaray have already prepared travel plans to fly him into Istanbul if he says yes.

Softfootball reported that the Turkish team, which was aiming for Manuel Akanji, has now shifted all attention to the German midfielder. Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano dropped the update on his official X account, confirming that City and Gala have reached an understanding. The only piece left is Gundogan’s approval.

Romano Posted:

“Galatasaray and Man City have agreed deal for Ilkay Gündogan. He’s leaving the club with authorization by City, waiting on player’s approval to two year contract. Gala are preparing his travel if Gündo accepts.”

It’s a curious situation. The German international still has a contract at the Etihad until 2026, but he’s been an unused substitute in all three of City’s opening league matches. Pep Guardiola still values him, but opportunities are clearly shrinking.

Reports suggest Gundogan has been torn between accepting the Turkish adventure or staying at City in a reduced role, possibly shifting into coaching duties sooner rather than later.

For Galatasaray, this is a big statement move. Their fans are already buzzing online, calling him the “missing piece” in their midfield. If the deal is wrapped up before Turkey’s September 12 window deadline, it could be one of the summer’s final headline transfers.

City, meanwhile, are bracing for life without their long-serving playmaker.
