Seven Arsenal and Chelsea inter-club transfers in recent times

With the latest signings of Noni Madueke and Kepa Arrizabalaga this summer, Arsenal are becoming famous for adding to their squad from Chelsea’s player sheet, making it eleven in the Premier League era.

Softfootball is in a postition to report that the Gunners purchased Madueke with a whopping £52m total package deal that will keep the English player at the Emirates for five years. Madueke’s deal is the latest switch from Chelsea to Arsenal after Arrizabalaga this summer.

Check out the other players who have made the switch from the west part of London to the north, from Sterling to Gallas.

Raheem Sterling

The English International sealed a deadline day loan to Arsenal from the Blues as an emergency signing. Joining the North London side, Sterling showed a rare glimpse of his ability despite his sensational utterance,

“You’re about to see the best of me”.

The former Manchester City winger scored just once and assisted five times in 28 appearances in all competitions. He has since returned to Chelsea.

Having won the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea, Kai Havertz brought an end to three years at Chelsea, with a £65m move to Arsenal in the 2023 summer transfer window.

The German initially struggled to settle in North London but found brilliant form in the second half of the season as he helped his side finish second behind Manchester City.

Meanwhile, his second campaign was hampered by injury, but he did manage to finish the 2024/25 season as his side’s top goalscorer, with 15 in all competitions.

Mikel Arteta signed Jorginho from Chelsea for £12m in the January 2023 transfer window, following a failed pursuit for Moises Caicedo.

With a wealth of experience, he became a key squad member for the Gunners and was often used as captain, while frequently stepping into the side in place of Thomas Partey and Declan Rice.

He left the Gunners upon the expiry of his contract at the end of last season and is now playing for Brazilian side Flamengo.

Willian had a very successful career with Chelsea, spending seven years in West London, winning five trophies. However, he couldn’t replicate this success upon his move to Arsenal in 2020.

The Brazilian spent just a season at the Emirates, scoring just one goal and providing seven assists in 37 appearances across all competitions.

His contract was then terminated after a season, as he returned to his boyhood club, Corinthians, on a free transfer.

Another Brazilian who joined Arsenal from Chelsea is David Luiz. Luiz joined for a £8m fee in the summer of 2019.

The Brazilian went on to become a central figure in the backline of the North London side, playing a key part in the Gunners’ FA Cup triumph at the end of his debut season.

He spent a further year with Arsenal but was plagued by injuries and ultimately left the club on a free transfer in 2021.

Petr Cech

Chelsea’s legendary goalkeeper, Petr Cech, also joined the list of players to switch from the West to the North. Petr Cech joined Arsenal for £10m following a hugely successful spell at Chelsea. He immediately became the Gunners’ number one goalkeeper with the loan departure of Wojciech Szczesny.

He won the Premier League Golden Glove award in his debut season, after keeping 16 clean sheets, as Arsenal finished second behind title-winners Leicester City. Cech remained Gunners’ first choice for the next two seasons, winning an FA Cup in that period.

However, an injury in the opening months of Unai Emery’s tenure saw him lose his spot to Bernd Leno. He eventually retired following the 4-1 Europa League final loss to his former club Chelsea in 2019. He impressively kept 54 clean sheets in 139 appearances for the Gunners.

Yossi Benayoun (signed in 2011)

Israeli Yossi Benayoun is another player to switch from the West London side to the North Londoners. Having been given limited chances at Chelsea, Israel captain Yossi Benayoun joined Arsenal on loan for the 2011/12 season.

He had a decent spell with the Gunners, scoring six goals and providing three assists in 25 appearances across all competitions. The Israeli was also opportunity to captain Arsenal, wearing the armband in a 1-0 defeat to Manchester City in the League Cup.

Following two years with Chelsea, Diarra joined Arsenal in 2007, but only stayed half a season. The Frenchman had little playing time with the Gunners, as his signing coincided with the emergence of fellow Frenchman Mathieu Flamini.

Diarra made just 12 appearances before moving to Portsmouth in the January transfer window, bringing an end to a short and forgettable spell.

William Gallas (signed in 2006)

William Gallas swapped Chelsea for Arsenal in 2006 and spent four seasons in North London. He went on to become the club captain ahead of the 2007/08 season but was stripped of the captaincy after an interview in which he revealed tensions in the squad and criticised his younger teammates.

Gallas remained at Arsenal until 2010, before leaving to join rivals Tottenham on a free transfer.

Despite all the transfers done by Arsenal this season, Football.London has indicated that the Gunners are likely to add more players to their squad.

Recall that Softfootball had reported earlier that Viktor Gyokeres’ deal is still hanging due to several complexities.  Arsenal have sealed a deal to complete the signing of 17-year-old Salford City starlet Will Wright after Liverpool dropped out of the race for the young forward.

Arsenal have reportedly offered £250,000 plus add-ons for striker Wright, reports the Sun, blowing Liverpool’s bid of £100,000 plus add-ons out of the water.
