Newcastle United have identified PSV Eindhoven forward Johan Bakayoko as a strong alternative should their move for primary target Antony Elanga fall through.

Softfootball earlier noted that the Magpies are edging closer to sealing a deal for the Swedish winger, pending a final agreement on the transfer fee with Nottingham Forest.

However, due to the ongoing back-and-forth in negotiations, Bakayoko has emerged as a viable Plan B. Football Insider reports that if Newcastle fail to reach common ground with Forest, they are ready to make a move for the Belgian international.

Bakayoko impressed last season with 30 appearances, netting 12 goals and providing 3 assists for PSV. He also ranked second in the Eredivisie for dribbles per game (1.6), showcasing his direct attacking style.

Despite Jacob Murphy enjoying arguably the best season of his career, contributing a combined 23 goals and assists. Manager Eddie Howe is keen to bring in competition for the Englishman. This explains the strong interest in both Elanga and Bakayoko.

A key advantage of Bakayoko’s profile is his contract situation, the Belgian star is entering the final four months of his deal with PSV and is reportedly interested in a move to St. James’ Park.

Still, Softfootball understands that Antony Elanga remains the top priority, and only a major breakdown in talks would lead Newcastle to pivot toward Bakayoko.

Initially, Newcastle had plans for a trio of signings, including Elanga, João Pedro, and goalkeeper James Trafford. However, with Pedro having joined Chelsea, their strategy has evolved, increasing their urgency to secure Elanga, something Nottingham Forest are keen to leverage during negotiations.

With Bakayoko’s contract winding down and his high potential at just 22 years old, the PSV winger could be a savvy signing for Eddie Howe — and one who could thrive under the English manager’s guidance.
