Bayern Munich have confirmed that Jamal Musiala will be sidelined for up to four months after suffering a fractured fibula during their Club World Cup quarter-final 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday, Softfootball can report.
The injury, which occurred late in the first half following a collision between the 22-year-old and PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, ended the German player’s participation in the game that eventually sent them out of the tournament. Musiala received treatment after the clash but was unable to continue and was substituted for Serge Gnabry at the break.
According to the Athletic, Bayern revealed that Musiala will undergo surgery upon his return to Munich today, Sunday, 6th July, and the club do not expect the playmaker to return to full fitness before November. The injury represents a significant setback for both Vincent Kompany’s side and the player himself, who had only just returned from a previous spell on the sidelines.

According to Max Eberl, Bayern’s board member for sport, while speaking after their loss on Saturday, said that the absence of Jamal will be felt by the team and staff as the new season gets closer. These were his statements;
“This is a real shock for Jamal and for all of us.” “Everyone knows how important Jamal is to our team, both in terms of football and as a person. He had just recovered from an injury and now he faces another long spell out. We will give him everything he needs and support him fully. We can’t wait to see him back out on the pitch.”
The fibula, located on the outer part of the lower leg, is the smaller of the two bones in the lower leg and plays a key role in supporting ankle stability. Musiala’s recovery time will depend on how the surgery progresses, but early estimates suggest he will miss much of the first half of the 2025/26 campaign.
Meanwhile, Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany, speaking after the match, expressed his frustration at the timing and nature of the injury, saying that;
“I’ve rarely been so angry at half-time,” Kompany said in his post-match press conference, though he clarified the emotion was not directed at Donnarumma, adding that the incident was simply “an accident.”
Musiala’s injury is another blow in a difficult spell for the young midfielder. He missed the closing months of last season due to a hamstring problem, which ruled him out of Bayern’s Champions League quarter-final defeat to Inter Milan. The Club World Cup was intended to mark his return to full action, and he had made a bright start, scoring a hat-trick against Auckland City FC in Bayern’s opening match after coming on as a substitute.
Musiala, who signed a new long-term contract with Bayern in February, has been central to the club’s recent attacking play and was expected to play a key role under Kompany this season. A graduate of Chelsea’s academy, he has become one of Europe’s brightest midfield prospects and a key figure for both club and country.
Aside from the blow from the injury incurred by Jamal Musiala, Softfootball had also reported the departure of German talisman Thomas Muller from the former Champions League winner. Muller had announced his intention to leave the club but officially did it on Saturday after Bayern Munich’s elimination in the ongoing Club World Cup.
Bayern were hoping to add the Club World Cup trophy to their Bundesliga title to send forth the German who had been with the club since childhood. Muller had spent 17 years at the club at the senior level and 9 years at the youth level. Although he had started his football career at TSV Pähl at the age of 10.
