There was plenty to discuss from Nigeria’s entertaining 3-3 draw with Russia, but Osayande Peter Edokpolor’s introduction was certainly one of the positives to take from the friendly.

The 19-year-old Benfica U20 forward made his senior international debut after coming on in the 70th minute and needed only eight minutes to announce himself on the international stage.
Edokpolor found the net in the 78th minute, giving the Super Eagles renewed hope as they attempted to overturn a two-goal deficit. Nigeria eventually completed the comeback through Akor Adams’ stoppage-time equaliser.
For us at Softfootball, one of the most encouraging aspects of Edokpolor’s cameo was his willingness to take responsibility in front of goal.
The youngster did not spend too much time looking for the perfect opportunity. When space opened up, he backed himself and pulled the trigger. The effort may have taken a deflection on its way into the net, but the decision to shoot in the first place was what stood out.
That is something Nigeria can certainly benefit from.
At times, the Super Eagles have players who appear reluctant to shoot until they have moved extremely close to the goalkeeper. There are also occasions when promising attacking positions end without an attempt on goal. Edokpolor showed a different instinct: see the opening, take the chance and make something happen.
Of course, one appearance and one goal are not enough to make major conclusions about a young player. There is still plenty for the Benfica youngster to learn, particularly as he continues adjusting to the demands and intensity of senior international football.
But his debut provided an encouraging glimpse of what he could potentially offer.
His direct approach, confidence to shoot and natural attacking instincts are qualities worth monitoring as his development continues.
At 19, Edokpolor still has time on his side. If he remains committed to improving, maintains consistency and manages to stay clear of serious injuries, there is no reason why he cannot develop into a useful option for Nigeria at senior level.
For now, his next priority should be continuing his progress with Benfica and the Nigeria U23 setup. The Super Eagles debut and goal against Russia are a good start, but the real challenge is turning that promising cameo into sustained development.
