Bruno Fernandes has thrown his support behind Cristiano Ronaldo amid the recent situation surrounding the Portugal captain, insisting that the five time Ballon d’Or winner remains the greatest icon of the national team and the country.
Fernandes said he spoke directly with Ronaldo and made his position clear, while stressing that Portugal remains united despite the recent tension surrounding the squad.
I spoke with Cristiano Ronaldo and told him that he is and will always remain the greatest icon of our national team and our country,
Fernandes said.
Our national team is united, not divided. Matters must be resolved internally and conclude well for both parties.
The comments come as Fernandes continues to play a key role for both Portugal and Manchester United, where he remains captain. The midfielder enjoyed a record breaking 2025/26 Premier League campaign, providing 21 assists, while Manchester United have continued discussions over a new contract.

Manchester United sent Fernandes a new contract proposal earlier this year, with reports indicating that negotiations have focused on salary, contract length and the release clause in his existing agreement. One report claimed Fernandes rejected the initial proposal after it included an increase of around €500,000 per year.
However, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has described the situation as an ongoing negotiation rather than a decision by Fernandes to leave Old Trafford. His current deal runs until 2027 and includes an option for another year, providing United with additional protection while discussions continue.
Fernandes’ latest comments underline his focus on unity within Portugal, while his club future remains the subject of continued negotiations at Manchester United.
