Parma have reached an agreement with Alberto Gilardino to become their new head coach, with the former Italy international set to replace Carlos Cuesta at the Serie A club. Gilardino is expected to take charge of the Parma project with immediate effect as the club moves quickly to begin a new chapter.
The appointment comes after Parma and Cuesta agreed to part ways following discussions over the direction of the club’s sporting project. Parma confirmed that the conditions required to continue the project were no longer in place.
Gilardino now returns to Parma, a club he represented as a player between 2002 and 2005, having previously built experience on the Serie A touchline. His arrival gives Parma a coach familiar with Italian football and with previous experience managing at the highest level.
The 44-year-old most recently worked with Pisa and had also managed Genoa, where he guided the club during two full Serie A campaigns. Reports in Italy indicate that the agreement with Parma has been reached, with Gilardino expected to lead the team as the club looks to establish greater stability following Cuesta’s departure.
Cuesta’s departure came despite Parma securing their first league victory of the campaign against Genoa. The club had collected four points from their opening five Serie A matches before the decision was made to end his tenure.
Gilardino will now begin work on the Parma project, with the club hoping the new manager can provide continuity and guide the team through the remainder of the Serie A season.
