Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has called on Nigeria to make a strong start to their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign when they face Madagascar in Uyo.
Speaking to the media ahead of Friday’s Group D encounter, Ndidi reflected on Nigeria’s disappointing start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign and stressed the importance of avoiding a similar situation this time around.
The midfielder admitted that the experience of the previous qualifying campaign was difficult for the team but insisted that the Super Eagles have learned from it and are now focused on setting the right tone from their opening fixture.
According to Ndidi, the first match of any qualifying campaign is particularly important because a positive result can provide the confidence and momentum needed for the games that follow.
“The first game is the most important game in every competition. This is qualifiers, so the first game sets the momentum.
Ndidi said.
The Leicester City midfielder also emphasised the importance of the Super Eagles remaining focused on their own objectives rather than worrying about the other teams in the group.
With Nigeria determined to secure qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, Ndidi said the team’s priority is to collect as many points as possible throughout the campaign and ultimately secure their place at the tournament.
He also acknowledged the pressure that comes with representing Nigeria but believes the players must embrace it and perform regardless of the expectations surrounding the team.

Ndidi stressed that the players, the team and the nation must remain united in pursuit of their objective, starting with Friday’s meeting with Madagascar.
After missing out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Nigeria will be hoping to put that disappointment behind them and begin their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign with three points in front of their home supporters in Uyo.
The midfielder’s message comes as the Super Eagles continue their preparations for the qualifier, with the team aiming to lay down an early marker in Group D against the Barea.
