Thomas Tuchel has insisted he has no regrets over the decisions he made during England’s 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, despite the heavy scrutiny that followed the result.
England took the lead through Anthony Gordon but surrendered their advantage after Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez scored late to send Argentina into the final. Tuchel came under criticism for his defensive substitutions and switch to a back five while England were ahead.
However, the England manager has continued to stand by his choices, explaining that Argentina’s attacking pressure forced him to react. Tuchel has accepted responsibility for the outcome but does not believe changing those decisions guarantees England would have avoided defeat.

The Mexico win became one of the defining moments of England’s tournament after they played much of the second half with 10 men. Tuchel has previously described the atmosphere and resilience shown by his players that night as something special.
