Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has revealed that he has no plans to retire anytime soon, insisting that he wants to continue playing football for another five or six years.
The Belgian goalkeeper, who turned 34 this year, remains an important figure at the Santiago Bernabéu and is currently under contract until June 2027. Courtois has now revealed his desire to remain active between the posts for several more seasons as he considers his long-term future.
Softfootball believes Courtois’ comments come at an important time, with Real Madrid reportedly close to extending his contract until June 2028. The club is keen to retain the experienced goalkeeper after his continued performances at the highest level, with reports indicating that negotiations are progressing towards an agreement.
Courtois has also started thinking about life after his playing career. Rather than immediately pursuing a first-team coaching role, the Belgian wants to focus on developing young goalkeepers and potentially creating an elite academy where he can pass on his experience.
The goalkeeper has already obtained UEFA coaching qualifications and has spoken about his interest in working within goalkeeping development. His ambition would be to help produce young goalkeepers capable of reaching the highest level, potentially including another player with qualities similar to his own.
For now, however, Courtois remains focused on extending his playing career. A potential new deal with Real Madrid would keep him at the club beyond his current contract, while his desire to play for another five or six years could see him remain active well into his late thirties.
With his future at Madrid increasingly secure, Courtois appears determined to continue competing at the highest level before eventually turning his attention to developing the next generation of goalkeepers.
