Former Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has revealed that Erik ten Hag managed the squad through fear rather than mutual respect.
The Frenchman expressed shock that the Dutch coach retained his job after last season, noting that his connection with the players had completely broken down. Softfootball reports that Varane described the atmosphere as tense and often conflicted.
Varane explained that while Ten Hag occasionally listened to feedback, he frequently made decisions without considering the players’ feelings.
This approach led to robust discussions where truths were exchanged, but it ultimately resulted in Varane being sidelined for nearly two months due to their disagreements over team management.
He clarified the dynamic by stating:
I was surprised he stayed. The connection with the group no longer existed. It was very tense at times. Sometimes he made an effort to listen to the players’ feedback. Sometimes he made decisions without listening to the players’ feelings.
