Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has backed Victor Boniface to regain his best form following the Nigerian striker’s return from injury.
Boniface marked his first start since recovering from injury with a goal in Leverkusen’s 3-1 Bundesliga victory over Hoffenheim on Sunday.
According to Softfootball, Alonso admitted that the events surrounding Boniface’s failed transfer to Al Nassr had been unusual but believes the forward can now focus fully on his football. Alonso said.
I always have trust. It was an important moment for him after his injury. The situation last week was a bit strange, unpleasant.
The proposed move to the Saudi Pro League collapsed despite Boniface reportedly undergoing a medical and reaching an agreement over personal terms.
Alonso believes it was important for the striker to feel valued again, particularly after returning to action following a lengthy injury layoff. The Leverkusen boss added:
It was important that he felt important again, felt the love of the fans, that’s important for the mind.
Boniface will now hope to build on his goal as Leverkusen continue their pursuit of Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich.
