Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt believes Erik ten Hag was unfortunate not to achieve greater success at Old Trafford, insisting the former manager deserved better results.
Softfootball understands that De Ligt reunited with Ten Hag at Manchester United during the summer after previously flourishing under the Dutch coach at Ajax.
United moved swiftly to sign the Netherlands international from Bayern Munich following Leny Yoro’s injury, with De Ligt making a promising start to life in the Premier League.
However, Ten Hag’s third season quickly unravelled, and the Dutchman was dismissed at the end of October after United’s defeat to West Ham left the club 14th in the league standings with just 11 points from nine matches.
Speaking about their reunion, De Ligt revealed that both he and Ten Hag had shared ambitions of bringing success back to Manchester United.
The defender explained that Ten Hag personally convinced him to join the club with the vision of building a successful team together.
De Ligt believes the former Ajax boss was denied the results his performances deserved, arguing that United often played well but repeatedly failed to convert their chances.
He admitted it was disappointing to see the partnership come to such an abrupt end after only a few months.
Following Ten Hag’s departure, United remained unbeaten in four matches under interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy.
However, Van Nistelrooy has also departed after Ruben Amorim officially assumed the role of Manchester United head coach.
