Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka continued his impressive start to life at Augsburg by providing an assist in his side’s convincing 3-0 victory over Schalke 04 in the second round of the DFB-Pokal.

The Nigerian international, who joined Augsburg on loan from Premier League side Brentford during the summer transfer window, delivered another influential performance in midfield before being substituted in the second half.

Softfootball understands that Onyeka’s creativity played a key role in helping Augsburg take control of the contest early on.

The 27-year-old set up Alexis Claude-Maurice for the opening goal in the 26th minute, marking his second assist in all competitions since arriving at the Bundesliga club.

Augsburg continued to dominate proceedings, with Arne Maier doubling the advantage late in the game before Samuel Essende sealed the comfortable victory with a stoppage-time strike.

Having impressed throughout the encounter, Onyeka was replaced by Maier in the 58th minute as Augsburg comfortably saw out the remainder of the match.

The assist is another positive sign for the Super Eagles midfielder, who has quickly settled into his new surroundings and is becoming an important figure in Augsburg’s setup.

The victory also keeps Augsburg’s hopes alive of winning the DFB-Pokal for the first time in the club’s history. Their best performance in the competition remains a run to the semi-finals during the 2009/10 season.

Reigning Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen are the current holders of the DFB-Pokal after completing a memorable domestic double last season.
