Softfootball can confirm Chelsea are actively monitoring Sporting CP defender Maxi Araújo and have opened talks over a potential summer move.
The Blues are targeting the versatile Uruguay international as a replacement for Marc Cucurella, who joined Real Madrid earlier this summer.
Although Araújo has an €80 million release clause, Sporting CP are believed to be willing to negotiate a deal in the region of £50 million.
Chelsea face competition from Premier League rivals Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, with all three clubs keeping a close eye on the 26-year-old.

Araújo’s versatility is one of his biggest strengths, as he is capable of playing at left-back, left wing-back or further forward on the left flank. He enjoyed an impressive campaign with Sporting, registering seven goals and six assists in all competitions while continuing to play a key role for the Uruguay national team.
Chelsea view Araújo as a player capable of adding quality, energy and attacking threat down the left side as they continue strengthening the squad ahead of the new season.
