Former France midfielder Mathieu Valbuena has questioned Kylian Mbappe’s commitment to the national team after the Real Madrid forward withdrew from France’s UEFA Nations League clash against Israel.

Softfootball notes that Mbappe’s decision has sparked debate in France, especially because he is the captain of the national team and remains one of the country’s most important players.

Valbuena believes Mbappe should have stayed with the France squad, even if he was not fully fit to play. According to him, wearing the captain’s armband comes with responsibility both on and off the pitch.

The former France international said Mbappe’s absence was surprising because a captain is expected to support the team, even during difficult moments. He believes the Real Madrid star could have still been present with the squad to encourage his teammates.

Valbuena also suggested that many France supporters were confused by the situation because Mbappe was not available for national team duty but was expected to return for Real Madrid’s match against Villarreal.

He claimed that Mbappe appears to be prioritising Real Madrid over France, especially as he is still trying to prove himself at his new club.

Mbappe joined Real Madrid with huge expectations, and Valbuena believes the forward is focused on making a strong impression in Spain. However, he added that this should not come at the expense of his national team responsibilities.

Valbuena also pointed out that Mbappe has not been at his best in recent appearances for France, suggesting that his performances have lacked the usual energy and influence fans expect from him.

The comments have added more pressure on Mbappe, who continues to face close attention as both Real Madrid’s star signing and France’s national team captain.
