Salah-Led Egypt Chase Historic First World Cup Win Against New Zealand

Egypt and New Zealand will battle for a potentially decisive three points in Group G when they meet at BC Place on Sunday.

Both sides opened their World Cup campaigns with draws after letting winning positions slip, leaving them eager to secure a victory that could significantly boost their hopes of reaching the knockout stages.

New Zealand produced an encouraging display in a 2-2 draw against Iran, extending their unbeaten run at the World Cup to four matches.

Egypt are equally determined to make history after coming agonisingly close to ending their own wait for a first World Cup win.

Despite creating further chances to extend their lead, Egypt were eventually held to a 1-1 draw, leaving coach Hossam Hassan frustrated but encouraged by the performance.

Team News

With Matthew Garbett replaced by Logan Rogerson on 15 June after the former was ruled out of the tournament with a hamstring injury, Darren Bazeley has no fresh fitness concerns ahead of the All Whites’ second Group G fixture.

Like New Zealand, Egypt emerged from their draw with Belgium without any new injury problems.

Salah remains the team’s leading marksman and sits two goals behind his manager’s tally of 69 for the Pharaohs, a mark he could match with a brace on Monday morning.
