Ghana and Panama meet at Toronto Stadium in the early hours of Thursday morning as both nations look to launch their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaigns with a positive result.

For Ghana, the tournament presents an opportunity to restore pride after a turbulent period. Not long ago, the Black Stars were reeling from the disappointment of failing to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in two decades. However, they responded impressively in World Cup qualifying, finishing top of CAF Group I with eight wins, one draw and just one defeat, ending six points clear of Madagascar.

Despite securing qualification comfortably, concerns remain over the team’s recent form. Since their final qualifying victory against Comoros in October 2025, Ghana have struggled badly, embarking on a seven-match winless run that has included defeats to Austria, Germany and Mexico.

Those disappointing results ultimately led to the departure of Otto Addo, with experienced Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz taking charge ahead of the tournament. The veteran manager, who has coached multiple national teams and guided Iran at the 2022 World Cup, now faces the challenge of reviving confidence within the squad before a difficult group campaign.

The Black Stars’ official social media channels recently shared footage of the squad’s arrival in Toronto, showing players receiving a passionate welcome from Ghanaian supporters eager to see their team make a strong start against Panama.

Panama arrive at the tournament hoping to make history. After suffering three defeats in their World Cup debut in 2018, Los Canaleros are aiming to reach the knockout stages for the first time.

Thomas Christiansen’s side impressed throughout CONCACAF qualifying, going unbeaten in the second round with three wins and three draws to secure their place at the tournament.

Although their preparations have produced mixed results, Panama showed encouraging signs despite a heavy 6-2 defeat to Brazil at the Maracana. The scoreline did not fully reflect the contest, with Panama enjoying several positive spells against one of the favourites for the World Cup.

Their run to the final of the 2025 CONCACAF Nations League also highlighted the progress being made under Christiansen, giving supporters genuine belief that the team can compete at this level.

This will be the first-ever meeting between Ghana and Panama, adding another layer of intrigue to a match that could have a significant impact on qualification hopes.

Team News

Ghana will be without influential midfielder Thomas Partey after he was denied a World Cup visa by Canadian authorities.

The former Arsenal star is expected to miss the clash with Panama before potentially returning for matches against England and Croatia.

Captain Jordan Ayew is set to lead the attack after scoring seven goals during qualification, while Antoine Semenyo and Ernest Nuamah are expected to provide support from the wings.Apart from Partey’s absence, Carlos Queiroz has a fully fit squad available for selection.

Panama have received a boost with star midfielder Adalberto Carrasquilla returning to training after missing recent warm-up matches through injury.

However, the Pumas midfielder is unlikely to start and may instead be introduced from the bench as Christiansen carefully manages his recovery.

Veteran midfielder Anibal Godoy could earn his 156th international cap and is expected to play a key leadership role in the centre of the park.

Both teams enter this contest with contrasting momentum. Ghana possess greater individual quality and World Cup pedigree, but their recent form is a genuine concern.

Panama have shown encouraging signs against stronger opposition and appear to be a more settled side heading into the tournament. However, the attacking threat of Jordan Ayew, Semenyo and Nuamah could prove decisive if the Black Stars rediscover their best form.

With both nations aware of the importance of a positive start, a closely fought contest appears likely.
